That said, golfers do need a little bit of “contour.” We want uphill lies, downhill approaches, elevated tee shots, etc. to keep us coming back.
Fortunately, two public courses deliver exactly that. Buffalo Creek (Northeast) and Tangle Ridge (Southwest) offer the kind of movement that’s rare around Dallas.
Both are built on rolling terrain, both feature memorable elevation changes, and both make you use every club in your bag.
But they create that experience in completely different ways.
Buffalo Creek feels like a country club that accidentally lets the public play.
Tangle Ridge feels like a Hill Country adventure hiding inside the Metroplex.
Buffalo Creek
The conditions only reinforce the experience.
Beautiful homes line many of the holes, the practice range is one of the better public facilities in the area, and the entire property has what I call “country club lite” energy.
It’s polished without feeling pretentious.
The downside?
You’re committing to the drive. From downtown Dallas, getting to Rockwall is easy enough.
Getting back can be another story.
and you have to pay for it on a relative basis.
Tangle Ridge
Tangle Ridge doesn’t ease you into the round.
It announces itself immediately.
Standing on the driving range, the views stretch across rolling hills that feel more like the Texas Hill Country than Grand Prairie. The course was intentionally designed around dramatic elevation changes and varying styles of holes.
The clubhouse is simple.
The golf isn’t.
Elevated tee shots.
Huge bunkers.
Risk-reward carries.
Memorable greens.
And because the course frequently offers excellent value, it might be one of the biggest bargains for golfers willing to drive a little farther south.
My Recommendation
Play Buffalo Creek if:
- You’re bringing an out-of-town friend.
- You want premium conditioning.
- You enjoy beautiful homes and a country club atmosphere.
- You’re willing to pay a little more for polish.
- You can secure a tee time (GolfNow)
Play Tangle Ridge if:
- You’re chasing value.
- You want dramatic, memorable golf.
- You found the right time slot, there should be plenty to choose from
- You’d rather finish your round with views than clubhouse amenities.

People always ask me which course is better.
I think they’re asking the wrong question.
Buffalo Creek wins on polish.
Tangle Ridge wins on personality.
Buffalo Creek feels like private golf without the membership.
Tangle Ridge feels like a road trip that turns into one of your favorite rounds of the year.
And in a city as flat as Dallas, they’re both a welcome reminder that golf is a lot more fun when your ball isn’t the only thing going up and down.
